Don’t Expect Novices to Learn by Doing What Experts Do

In Daniel T. Willingham’s book ‘Why Don’t Students Like School’ he devotes a whole chapter to the myth that the way to get someone to become an expert is to copy what an expert does. He makes a compelling case that “cognition in early training is fundamentally different from cognition late in training”. We can also forget the fundamental building blocks which have created the ‘expert’ over time and this is what a novice needs on their path towards expertise.

I was reminded of this last week when I was due to do a short observation on an NQT at school.

The day before, she had come in to watch one of my lessons.
As I usually do, I had an activity on the board for children to complete as soon as they came in to the lesson.
